“Night of the Arts” live performance 17.08.2023 Tischenko Gallery, Helsinki
During August, Vääristymä will play with their custom-made analog synthesizers for Helsinki’s “Night of the Arts” at the Tischenko Gallery. “We Are Art” asked some questions to Jarko and Janne. They told us their story and gave some previews of their upcoming performance.
(WAA) Hey there! We’re thrilled to have your band performing at the Tischenko Gallery next month! For those who haven’t had the pleasure of hearing your music yet, could you give us a little introduction to your band’s story? We heard that you even build your own instruments…”
(Vääristymä) We are two brothers from Helsinki. We began making music on computers in 1992, soon realizing that we were allergic to completely clinical digital sounds. We longed for sounds with life and imperfections. Analog synthesizers were the solution, but they were very expensive at the time. Janne started building his own oscillators, and the imperfections in the sound began to emerge. This gave birth to the dream of creating music with completely homemade instruments, and now we find ourselves as prisoners of these devices.
(WAA) “The connection between vÄäristymä, New Polar Sound, and the Tischenko Gallery sounds intriguing! How did this exciting collaboration come about?”
(Vääristymä) We were at Kiasma (a contemporary art museum in Helsinki) listening to a discussion about our late idol, Mika Vainio. After the discussion, an Italian man named Manuele Frau approached us when he noticed us wearing t-shirts of an Italian record label. It turned out that we had recorded for the same label. We got to know each other, and Manuele introduced us to his own label, New Polar Sound, and the team behind Tischenko Gallery, which is associated with running the label. This is where our collaboration began.
(WAA) “We can’t wait to witness your live performance at the gallery, which will take place during the Helsinki Night Of The Art festival. Can you give us a sneak peek of what’s in store?”
(Vääristymä) We have not previously performed the songs that will be heard on the Night of the Arts live. We take care of the visuals ourselves, so there are many things that could go wrong. Fortunately, our genre is experimental music.

Elokuun aikana Vääristymä soittaa omilla kustomoiduilla analogisynthesizereillään Helsingin “Taiteiden yössä” Tischenko Galleriassa. “We Are Art” esitti muutamia kysymyksiä Jarkolle ja Jannelle. He kertoivat meille tarinansa ja antoivat esimakua tulevasta esityksestään.
(WAA) “Hei siellä! Olemme innoissamme siitä, että teidän bändinne esiintyy Tischenko Galleriassa ensi kuussa! Niille, jotka eivät ole vielä saaneet iloa kuulla musiikkianne, voisitteko antaa meille pienen esittelyn bändinne tarinasta? Kuulimme, että rakennatte jopa omia soittimianne…”
(Vääristymä) Olemme kaksi veljestä Helsingistä. Aloitimme musanteon tietokoneilla vuonna 1992 todeten pian olevamme allergisia täysin kliiniselle digitaaliselle äänelle. Kaipasimme ääniin eloa ja virheitä. Analogisyntetisaattorit olivat ratkaisu tuohon, mutta ne olivat tuolloin hyvin kalliita. Janne alkoi rakentelemaan omia oskillaattoreitaan ja virheitä soundissa alkoi kuulumaan. Syntyi haave tehdä musiikkia täysin omatekoisin laittein ja näiden laitteiden vankeina tässä nyttemmin ollaankin.
(WAA) “Yhteys vÄäristymä-bändin, New Polar Soundin ja Tischenko Gallerian välillä kuulostaa mielenkiintoiselta! Kuinka tämä jännittävä yhteistyö sai alkunsa?”
(Vääristymä) Olimme Kiasmassa kuuntelemassa edesmennyttä idoliamme Mika Vainiota koskevaa keskustelua. Keskustelun päätyttyä muuan mies, italialainen Manuele Frau, pysäytti meidät havaittuaan italialialaisen levy-yhtiän t-paidat yllämme. Kävi ilmi, että olimme levyttäneet samalle lafkalle. Tutustuimme ja Manuele esitteli meille oman labelinsä New Polar Soundin sekä sen pyörittämiseen liittyvän Tischenko Gallerian taustajoukkoineen. Tästä alkoi yhteistyö.
(WAA) “Emme malta odottaa, että pääsemme todistamaan live-esitystänne galleriassa, joka tapahtuu Helsingin Taiteiden yön festivaalin aikana. Voitteko antaa meille pienen kurkistuksen siitä, mitä on luvassa?”
(Vääristymä) Taiteiden yönä kuultavia kappaleita emme ole aiemmin esittäneet livenä. Vastaamme itse visuaaleista, joten tässä on monta asiaa mikä saattaa epäonnistua. Onneksi lajimme on kokeellinen musiikki.
